Regional ReCOGnition Awards for 2008
Nine awards were presented at the GPCOG Annual Meeting on June 19, 2008. The purpose of the ReCOGnition Awards is to identify and promote success stories in local government and community-based groups and organizations with a parallel objective of encouraging the replication of best practices elsewhere. The awards are presented for best practices in regional cooperation, municipal planning, municipal management, economic development, citizen participation, and (new this year) sustainability initiatives. GPCOG Holds First Forum of a Series on Sustainability
Over 200 people attended GPCOG's first forum on sustainability "Preparing our Region for a Sustainable Energy Future." The program featured a riveting presentation by Charlie Stephens, a former Senior Policy Analyst with the Oregon Department of Energy. Click here for more information or to order the DVD.
Local leaders cite new PIRG Report as boosting Downeaster and transit service by showing big savings of energy, time, money, and CO2 from transit. In the U.S. PIRG Education Fund report, "A Better Way to Go: Meeting America’s 21st Century Transportation Challenges with Modern Public Transit," Portland was ranked the 10th top urbanized area with population under 500,000 for oil savings from transit. GPCOG Corridor Investments In 2005 MaineDOT and GPCOG worked together in developing corridors of regional significance in preparation for the MaineDOT 20-year plan and corridor based planning. In 2006 GPCOG designated three corridors (Coastal, Central, and Lakes Region) in Cumberland County, and developed the Cumberland County Strategic Transportation Investments by Corridor document. Public Participation and Environmental Justice Plan Available
Public Participation and Environmental Justice are essential to the success of any public program or project. GPCOG and PACTS have created a joint Public Participation and Title VI Plan describing our policies and procedures that ensure full and fair participation by all potentially affected communities in the transportation decision-making process.

Final Draft Report of the Mayor's Sustainable Portland Task Force
The Sustainable Portland Task Force was established by the City of Portland in 2006 to study and address issues related to Portland's environmental, economic and community sustainability.
