Transit agencies adjust to COVID-19

We have created a one-stop information hub for everything our region's 7 transit agencies are doing as they respond to the the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Region-wide Updates

  • Fare-free rides starting March 20 on BSOOB Transit, Lakes Region Explorer, METRO, RTP, South Portland, and YCCAC.
  • The launch of electronic fare collection for buses is postponed.
  • People should ride only if absolutely necessary.
  • Enhanced cleaning being implemented at all agencies. 

Agency-specific Updates

Amtrak Downeaster

  • Service reduced to two round trips each day – until further notice.
  • Most stations are not staffed. 
  • Reservations should be made ahead of time online or by calling 1-800-USA-RAIL.   
  • During this time, passengers may cancel or change their reservations without penalty.

BSOOB Transit

Casco Bay Lines


  • All rides are free through April 30.
  • Service reduced to Saturday schedule on all routes except BREEZ. The BREEZ will use Saturday schedule plus one added morning run, leaving Brunswick at 5:55 a.m.
  • Pulse on Elm Street and the main office on St. John Street are closed to the public.

RTP/Lakes Region Explorer

  • All paratransit and bus rides are free through April 30.
  • Lakes Region Explorer: Starting March 23, 2020, the Lakes Region Explorer will not run the last round trip of the day (normally departing Bridgton at 7:10 pm and returning from Portland at 8:45 p.m. 
  • Demand Response: Effective March 21, Saturday service ends at 1:00 pm. No Sunday service until further notice. 
  • Office on St. John Street is closed to the public.
