Housing for All

Our region, from Casco Bay to the Lakes Region, is the fastest growing region of the state. Managing growth is a challenge for many of our fast-growing municipalities. The region’s attractiveness has led to significant growth pressures, and retaining housing for our workforce has become a top priority. A dearth of affordable housing and diverse housing stock in rural and suburban towns makes it difficult both for young adults to afford to live in their hometowns and for elders to age in their place of choice.

GPCOG provides a range of planning services to support housing, including comprehensive planning, neighborhood master planning, ordinance development, workshop facilitation, and advocacy. As a service to our members, we are a resource to help our cities and towns reinforce growth in village centers and other appropriate locations, and protect rural character, open spaces and farms. We help communities assess their planning needs and develop an appropriate and individualized path forward.

GPCOG recently completed the South Portland West End Neighborhood Master Plan. It focuses on land use and transportation improvements needed to help this diverse neighborhood thrive. Some of our recommendations have already been implemented.  Avesta Housing is now pursuing building additional affordable housing in the community.
